Winner of the 2022 RCx Flex Project of the Year and EESP Rookie of the Year

In 2022, BIN Physics and Oak Forest High School achieved more energy savings than any other project in the ComEd® Energy Efficiency Program RCx Flex offering.

Chicago, Illinois. BIN Physics, an authorized Service Provider for the ComEd Energy Efficiency Program RCx Flex offering, announces today that it was named winner of the 2022 RCx Flex Project of the Year. All Energy Efficiency Service Providers (EESPs) with a completed project in 2022 were eligible for the award. BIN Physics won for the work done for School District 228’s Oak Forest High School in Oak Forest, IL, which identified and implemented the most energy savings of any RCx Flex project.

Additionally, BIN Physics was named the 2022 “Rookie of the Year” for outstanding performance by a new EESP in 2022. These awards recognize the superior technical excellence, dedication to client success, and collaborative customer service provided by BIN Physics.

“This is a real honor and winning in the very first year is just amazing. I did not come here today expecting to win an award,” said Chris Benson, Professional Engineer (PE) and President of BIN Physics. “When I work on these projects, I put in a lot of hours and do what would I do if I owned the building. If I did, I’d leave no stone unturned looking for ways to save money. Plus, it makes the building more comfortable and it’s good for the environment, so why not? I have fun doing this and I think these are all reasons why the project was such a great success.”

The awards are given annually by the ComEd Energy Efficiency Program RCx Flex offering at the service provider annual workshop meeting. The ComEd Energy Efficiency Program has offerings for residential, business, and public sector customers. An RCx (retro-commissioning) Flex project can help save an average of five percent on annual energy bills with an average simple payback of less than 1.5 years for implemented energy improvements. All ComEd utility customers pay into the Energy Efficiency Program through their energy bill to generate funding for Illinois utility energy-efficiency programs.

As a result of the RCx project, Oak Forest High School reduced its energy bill by 24.1%, which represents an annual dollar savings well into 6 figures. Post-implementation analysis conducted by the offering confirmed the building is currently experiencing this level of savings. Oak Forest HS is a comprehensive public high school with a student population of approximately 1,325 students in grades 9-12. In addition to classrooms and offices, the school has various athletic oriented spaces, including a swimming pool, basketball courts, and a fieldhouse.

“I’m very happy with the results, I know the school is as well, and I’m looking forward to making the next opportunity an even bigger success,” said Chris Benson, PE.
