Overview

The primary goals of the retro-commissioning project, completed through the ComEd Energy Efficiency Program Retro-commissioning Flex Offering, were to reduce energy consumption, improve the indoor environment, and achieve long-term cost savings for Orion Industries. The collaboration between Orion Industries, BIN Physics, and ComEd's Energy Efficiency Program showcased the potential benefits of retro-commissioning in industrial settings. The project successfully addressed inefficiencies in the HVAC systems, leading to substantial energy savings and financial benefits.

Solutions

During the initial assessment, it was identified that the rooftop units (RTUs) were not operating efficiently. Analysis of energy consumption data, conducted by BIN Physics, revealed discrepancies in response to Building Automation System (BAS) scheduling and a lack of economizing in the HVAC systems, leading to unnecessary energy wastage.

To address these issues, BIN Physics proposed and implemented the installation of new controls and programming. These measures not only resolved the scheduling and economizing problems but also allowed for better monitoring and control of the HVAC systems.

New control thermostats were seamlessly integrated into the existing infrastructure, ensuring minimal disruption to Orion Industries' daily operations. BIN Physics provided expertise and support throughout the project. The project team also offered training to facility staff to maximize the benefits of the upgraded system.

Impact

Orion Industries received a significant incentive check of $10,200, covering a substantial portion of the implementation costs. The project, led by BIN Physics, resulted in an impressive annual energy savings of 268,430 kWh and 2,502 therms. The reduced energy consumption equates to an annual cost savings of $23,976 for Orion Industries.

Beyond the financial gains, the retro-commissioning project positively impacted the indoor environment at Orion Industries. Employees now experience a more comfortable and consistent climate, contributing to improved productivity and overall well-being.

When I work on these projects, I put in a lot of hours and do what would I do if I owned the building. If I did, I’d leave no stone unturned looking for ways to save money. Plus, it makes the building more comfortable and it’s good for the environment, so why not? I have fun doing this and I think these are all reasons why my projects are successful.
