Overview

Bremen High School is located in Midlothian, Illinois, approximately 20 miles south of Chicago. It is one of four high schools in Bremen High School District 228, serving 1,450 students from the villages of Midlothian, Posen, Markham, and Harvey, Illinois. The school includes classrooms, offices, a kitchen and cafeteria, an auditorium, basketball gymnasiums, a swimming pool, a football stadium/field, and a fieldhouse. Prior to the RCx project, Bremen High School had an Energy Star score of 67, indicating above-average energy efficiency.

Boiler hot water and air-cooled chilled water provide heating and cooling to the majority of the building. Perimeter spaces, mainly classrooms, are conditioned with univents, with air exhausted through four corridor exhaust fans. Nine constant volume air handling units (AHUs) serve the gyms, locker rooms, pool, and an office area. Several rooftop units (RTUs) provide additional conditioning:

  • RTU-1, RTU-2, and RTU-3 serve the nurse’s office area, the main office, and the IMC presentation room, respectively.
  • Four stand-alone RTUs provide supplemental cooling to the second-floor computer labs.
  • Three additional RTUs serve the cafeteria.
  • A variety of athletic and IMC offices have additional split system cooling.

Solutions

During the investigation phase of the RCx process, 13 energy conservation measures (ECMs) were identified and implemented. These measures included:

  • Scheduling adjustments for AHUs, univents, and dual temperature system pumps.
  • Economizer setpoint adjustments to optimize cooling efficiency.
  • Implementation of duct static pressure reset controls on RTUs and AHUs.
  • Chilled water temperature reset strategies to optimize cooling performance.
  • Exterior lighting controls to reduce unnecessary energy consumption.
  • Summer shutdown of equipment when the building is vacant for extended periods.
  • Scheduling of large exhaust fans to improve efficiency.

The implementation of these measures was completed in collaboration with the school’s preferred HVAC controls contractor, ensuring smooth integration with existing systems.

Impact

The successful implementation of the RCx project led to substantial energy and cost savings for Bremen High School:

  • Annual energy consumption was reduced by 343,683 kWh of electricity and 10,993 therms of natural gas.
  • Total annual cost savings amounted to $41,404.
  • The project resulted in a 17.2% reduction in energy consumption compared to the pre-project baseline.

By identifying and addressing inefficiencies in HVAC operations, BIN Physics enabled Bremen High School to demonstrate a strong commitment to energy efficiency improvements within the district.

We love what we do

Related Projects

When I work on these projects, I put in a lot of hours and do what would I do if I owned the building. If I did, I’d leave no stone unturned looking for ways to save money. Plus, it makes the building more comfortable and it’s good for the environment, so why not? I have fun doing this and I think these are all reasons why my projects are successful.
